  5. There are a whole bunch of attempts to unify metrics, logs and traces into a single DB now. * InfluxDB (the newest Rust rewrite) * http://openobserve.ai/ * https://uptrace.dev/ * Clickhouse powered solutions (eg https://signoz.io ) * ... ? I'm quite skeptical about the "store raw data" approach. It makes querying much more complex and slower, storage much more expensive, etc. Columnar databases that can store the da…

  9. My understanding is that APM became or always was a marketing term which is used rather freely. For that reason I try to avoid it, but search engines love it and I don't know a better alternative. >Whether I can find out why that component is slow might not be as easy (not sure what granularity tracing happens inside a component). It is true that you can't always guess what operation going to be slow and instrument…

It is possible using Vector Logs which Uptrace supports out-of-the-box, for example: - https://vector.dev/docs/reference/configuration/sources/dock... - https://uptrace.dev/get/ingest/vector.html If you are having troubles making it work, feel free to open an issue on Github and I will provide a complete example.

  13. Speaking about OpenTelemetry, has anyone used https://uptrace.dev ? From a quick glance it seems to be simple, free and open-source deployed as a single Go binary. They use ClickHouse to store data. Almost too good to be true. I'm contemplating them for a new project.

  15. We’ve just released Uptrace v2.0 , a major re-architecture of our open-source observability platform (traces, logs, metrics). This release focuses on performance and scalability : - 5–10x faster queries using ClickHouse’s new JSON column type (nested fields can be queried directly with dot-notation, no ETL or flattening required) - Multi-project support – manage projects, users, and orgs via UI or YAML seed files -…

if you are hitting pauses due to GC issues, you should into putting appropriate data structures into a memory arena, here's a reasonable read: https://uptrace.dev/blog/golang-memory-arena These are all tools. Java used to have this all the time, and we (ex-java programmer) had ways around this until the JVM improved.

  19. > and goes on to explain that each arena has its own unique/distinct address space That does not seem to be how it is implemented now. Try the example use-after-free on https://uptrace.dev/blog/posts/go-memory-arena.html under 'Address Sanitizer'. There is no error at all when you dereference, it silently keeps working as freed pointers often do (until they don't). Maybe they will add the virtual address space thing…

  22. Very cool, is Next support planned? I haven't tried onboarding yours, but I like your focus on easy setup. Datadog has become more difficult to setup over time. Sentry, PostHog, and SigNoz were fast to setup but I could never get metrics from my app to be received by any of them. Maybe I was rate limited or maybe it was a config problem, but never got them to work. How much traffic can it handle and what's the prici…
