What Hacker News says?

  1. I've been working on an open source online database tool called Baserow [0] as a side project. In the current form you can compare it with a simple version of Airtable, but Baserow can handle much more data, you can optionally host it on your own server, you can write plugins for it and it's (going to be) open source. Everyone can try out an early test version at the website [0]. More features are going to be follow…

  5. FYI if anyone from baserow is reading this, I tried following your docs at https://baserow.io/docs/guides%2Fdemo-environment and can't clone your git repo -- I'm getting permission denied. Once I looked up the HTTP url it worked fine, so I think you may have a permissions issue in gitlab.

  7. It depends a little bit on how you are going self host it. There are updating instructions at the bottom of https://baserow.io/docs/guides/installation/install-on-ubunt... and https://baserow.io/docs/guides/installation/install-on-cloud... We are going to make it much easier to self host and update in the future.

  11. A while back Microsoft announced Microsoft Lists, which is a similar tool. Of course there are also existing tools like Airtable, Bubble, Mendix etc. All these tools are great, but they have some downsides in my opinion. - If the product ever gets discontinued you might lose all your work. - All these tools have limits regarding the amount of rows you can store. - If your business depends on such a product and the p…

  19. In a few months you might be interested in Baserow. It's an open source alternative to Airtable that we're developing. Right now we have a very early test version at https://baserow.io that everyone can try, but it's still limited. This month we're adding some essential features and next months will be in light of the open source release. After that you can self host it without any limits.
