Why HN links it

HN readers link Flox as a Nix-based tool for reproducible developer environments that makes installing packages easy. Most comments cite it as an alternative to devenv, Devbox and Dev Containers.

Flox gives platform teams one declared environment that stays reproducible for every developer and agent, from the first commit through to production.

What Hacker News says?

  1. Try flox [0]. It's an imperative frontend for Nix that I've been using. I don't know how to use nix-shell/flakes or whatever it is they do now, but flox makes it easy to just install stuff. [0]: https://flox.dev/

  3. Technically its performance is a bit slower than CachyOS, and some of the package versions can be a bit behind as well (like Mesa or the kernel), which can contribute to the slowness. Flatpaks work fine though for the most part. I would recommend CachyOS if you're after raw performance and you're technically inclined, and don't mind ocassionally going into the terminal to fix something or do some maintenance (maybe…

  5. Nix and NixOS are in something like the state git was in before GitHub: the fundamental idea is based on more serious computer science than the status quo (SVN, Docker), the plumbing still has some issues but isn’t worse, and the porcelain and docs are just not there for mainstream adoption. I think that might have changed with the release of flox: https://flox.dev , it’s basically seamless (and that’s not surprisin…

  7. > Hey there! Looks like you may have missed the Nix/Generic and Nix/NixOS tabs at https://flox.dev/docs/install-flox/ ? Do those satisfy the side by side use case you’re talking about? I totally did! Those are what I was looking for. (Although I'm glad I missed them in a way because I'm happy to have gotten to explore the behavior of the Flox installer when there's an existing Nix install already.) How embarrassing!…

  9. Hey there! Looks like you may have missed the Nix/Generic and Nix/NixOS tabs at https://flox.dev/docs/install-flox/ ? Do those satisfy the side by side use case you’re talking about? I think the best way to use fish at the moment is `FLOX_SHELL=zsh flox activate -- fish`. That doesn’t support aliases but should mostly work Are you hoping to actually hack on the source or just trying to understand how to come up with…

  11. `flox` needs Nix to function. So the rpm/dev/OSX installers first install Nix, and then installs flox itself. If you have Nix already, you can try it out as described here: https://flox.dev/docs/install-flox/#install-with-existing-ni... . side-note: with further improvements to Nix as a library, it may be possible to make installing Nix not necessary for flox to function, but this is on a longer time horizon... don'…

  17. Thanks for asking! I'm Michael Brantley, Flox CTO and formerly responsible for build and release engineering at the D. E. Shaw group. The high-level summary can be found in https://flox.dev/about but the back story is that I started diving into Nix in late 2017, and once I finally understood how Nix worked, how amazing the Nix community is and the incredible potential of the Nixpkgs collection I immediately realized…

  21. https://flox.dev/docs/cookbook/languages/rust/ That describes how to get set up with Rust. Long story short, cargo depends on a linker and brings it along, but doesn’t expose it to other programs via PATH. If there are build scripts that call out to rustc or a linker directly then you need to explicitly install one. This is intentional, but yeah it can be surprising when you get an error about not finding a linker.…

  23. I think that's a bit reductive, but I get the intent. A lot of people see systemic problems in their development and turn to tools to reduce the cognitive load, busywork, or just otherwise automate a solution. For example "we always argue over formatting" -> use an automated formatter. That makes total sense as long as managing/interacting with the tool is less work, not just different work. With Nix I still think i…

  25. I think it's a bad addition since it pushes people towards a worse solution to a common problem. Using "go tool" forces you to have a bunch of dependencies in your go.mod that can conflict with your software's real dependency requirements, when there's zero reason those matter. You shouldn't have to care if one of your developer tools depends on a different version of a library than you. It makes it so the tools the…

  27. That's mostly what we've built with Flox [1] (though I'm not exactly sure what you mean by run any command from any Nix package). It looks and feels like an amped up package manager, but uses Nix as kind of an infrastructure layer under the hood. Here's a typical workflow for an individual developer: - cd into repo - `flox activate` -> puts you into a subshell with your desired tools, environment variables, services…
