What Hacker News says?

  1. From the service provider and devops perspective I find reCAPTCHA beautiful. It brings down malicious form fill, form spam, user creation and password brute forcing rates. Also as a VPN user, I found out that migrating to more expensive, higher grade VPN, solved a lot of my problems. In the end it is not privacy, not your VPN that matters from the service provider point of view. It matters that your IP address is sp…

  3. There are many easy to use libraries specific to different languages(like https://www.phpcaptcha.org/ for php) and frameworks. These are not as secure as recaptcha, but in most cases does the trick. There are also services similar to recaptcha like solve media and hcaptcha. I believe hcaptcha is a drop-in replacement( https://hcaptcha.com/docs ).

  5. https://hcaptcha.com/ seems to be a viable alternative. If you are a developer, please consider using something other than reCaptcha. Not only is it annoying, but a privacy nightmare as well.

  21. I run android. Other devs run Android and recent iPhones. Someone may have an iPhone 6S to test and fix on, I'll check. In the future, if you've got a bug that's preventing you from doing your thing, we have bug reporting instructions: https://www.hcaptcha.com/reporting-bugs ETA: two different people have tested on Chrome and Safari on iPhone 6S locally, and can't reproduce. 23. Hi! I work at hCaptcha (we handle the CF captchas), and to respond specifically: audio is inaccessible for those with visual and auditory processing issues, as well as being broken by ML techniques. Not to project, but we suspect this is why Google turns it off if your browser looks at all suspicious. Another user mentioned the Privacy Pass solution: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23902870 While Privacy Pass i…

  25. Thank you for sharing your experience. Cloudflare switched to using hCaptcha a couple months ago, I think and I only just noticed that they do not offer an audio-based captcha. However, hCaptcha integrates with Privacy Pass[0], and you can top up your tokens by solving a captcha at [1] and [2]. What you could do (and I realize this is far from ideal), is getting a sighted friend to solve a couple of captchas so you…

  27. Accessibility - I am surprised nobody mentioned it. We looked at hCaptcha, and the feedback we got was that their approach to accessibility is simply unacceptable. If you can't solve the challenges, you have to sign up on their website, in advance, and provide them with your email address. https://www.hcaptcha.com/accessibility We just couldn't justify that sort of privacy imposition. Personally, I think all Captcha…

  29. I was a bit surprised to not find a reference to the singularly most irritating thing about Google's recaptcha - that it treats me - the one trying to authenticate - as a free source of data labels for its ML systems. I guess I'm unlikely to be the only one irked by another "identify all the bicycles" challenge. Do the labels I provide belong to me or to Google? .. when I signed no job contract with them to provide…
